Study Skills

Study Skills – A Whole School Approach

At Sutton Park School we support our students with their study skills from first to sixth year through classroom-based study skills lessons and one-to-one study support. We focus on the following elements to equip our students with the necessary skills for success in their studies:

  • Goal setting
  • Learning styles
  • Notetaking
  • Organisation
  • Memory techniques
  • Active learning strategies
  • Advice for Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs)
  • Study planning & time management

Study Skills Awareness Week

This is part of a whole school initiative aimed at improving students’ ability to study, manage time and to retain and recall information. All teachers provide subject specific study skills to their students. Teachers look at notetaking, how their exam is assessed, choice, priority areas, patterns. The Guidance Department runs study skills workshops for all senior cycle students during lunch focused on time management, organisation of study, effective study techniques and how to use helpful resources such as Studyclix. All 1st, 2nd & 3rd years receive 4 weeks of study skills workshops in September/October focused on goal setting, memory techniques and how to implement an effective study system. The Guidance department also hosts a study sills seminar for parents aimed at equipping parents with the skills and confidence they need to best support their child in their studies at home.
