The Co-Curricular Sporting Programme in Sutton Park School is wide and varied. Whether you want to participate in sporting activities just for fun or compete at the highest schools’ level in the country, we have something for every student.
Our Sporting Programme runs from 3.45-4.45pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday & from 1.45-3.15pm on Wednesdays.
We compete in the second tier of the Leinster Hockey League, regularly reaching the latter stages of the various competitions – In the last 5 years we have won the Senior 1A League, the Junior 1A League and the 1st Year Leinster League.
We also compete in the Northside League, where we are very competitive across all the leagues, being outright winners in each respective age category at least once over the past 5 years
The boys league runs in such a way that each team competes in a league based on their first 3 results of the year. Sutton Park regularly place between 4th & 8th in Leinster Boys hockey out of a total of 22 Schools.
Further to the above we compete in various Cups which often see our teams competitive in the early stages of the Cup or the latter stages of the Plate & Trophy.
The aim for hockey in SPS is to assist as many boys as possible to get involved in the game and compete against some of the best schools in Ireland which they might not be able to do in other sports due to the league structures etc.
Sutton Park School boasts a formidable badminton team consisting of 50 talented students playing across three age groups: U14, U16, and U18, both with girls’ and boys’ teams. The team regularly competes in the Dublin schools league, where they aim to qualify for the Leinster finals. The dedication and hard work of the team have already paid off, with the U14 Boys team, made up of 1st years, emerging victorious in their division this year. With a strong history of success, the Sutton Park School badminton team is sure to continue to excel in the future.
Sutton Park School is ranked in the top volleyball schools in the country. Its popularity cannot be exaggerated. In the 2022-2023 season, we have in excess of 100 students competing in Volleyball Ireland’s National League and Cup competitions.
To date for the 2022-2023 league season, all competing teams have managed to advance to the semi-final stages of their competitions.
In addition to success within the schools’ competitions, we currently have 4 students on National Squads at U.16 & U.20 Age Grades. These students are enjoying the best coaching Ireland has to offer and the chance to represent their nation internationally. We also have one past pupil on scholarship to a high school volleyball progamme in the states and another playing professional volleyball in Europe.
We work closely with Volleyball Ireland on their Coaching Programmes. Our Transition Year students complete a certified coaching & refereeing course. This enables them to help coach our younger students and officiate in our schools’ competitions.
Sutton Park School has a long history in schools’ athletics.
We are lucky to have a 200m grass track and long jump pit on our school grounds. The Summer Term is a hive of activity on the track as our students ready themselves for their events!
We compete in all invitational cross -country and Track & Field Events during the year. This year we hosted our Inaugural Sutton Park School Cross-Country Relay event which was a huge success.
The most important events are the North Leinster Athletics Cross-Country and T & F Competitions. From these regional events our students can advance to the Leinsters & ultimately National Finals.
Year on Year, the number of our students competing and advancing to Provincial & National Finals increases.
Since the O’Donovan Brothers success in the Olympics, Sutton Park School have been part of Rowing Ireland’s TrY Rowing Programme. This programme sees our TY students train as indoor Rowing Coaches and train our younger students. Our TY’s love coaching and our younger students love to learn from them.
Rowing Ireland then host both Indoor and on the water rowing events throughout the year which we compete in. Rowing has been a brilliant addition to our sporting programme. We have seen lots of students blossom in this sport who may not have otherwise found an activity that suited them.
Our basketball teams compete in the Dublin Development League. This is a popular activity for our students, many of whom enjoy to play recreationally.
Rounders has long been a very popular activity in our Summer Programme. In the Summer Term of 2022 we introduced Cricket to our schedule and this was a big hit. Our students enjoyed a few friendly fixtures during the Summer Term and we would like to build on this again in the Summer Term 2023
Our “Games” option encompasses a wide range of different activities. It is a fantastic choice for students who want to play/keep fit but don’t necessarily want to do so in a competitive environment. Our students who choose Games, play a variety of fun games in a no pressure atmosphere.
